As a result of increased program funding, three additional Advanced Practice Centers were selected and funded in September 2004. One Advanced Practice Center was chosen to serve as the national model for rural public health, and in total, the Advanced Practice Centers serve eight of the 10 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Regions. The Western New York Public Health Alliance (WNYPHA) Rural Advanced Practice Center (APC) is a resource for rural public health agencies throughout the nation as it has developed tools to be utilized in rural public health emergency planning and provides unique insight on the development and maintenance of successful public health department collaboration and regionalism. The WHYPHA placed an emphasis on addressing the emergency preparedness and public health implications of urban citizens evacuating to surrounding rural and suburban communities. The WNYPHA is a member of the APC Alumni Network
